The monocle. A type of corrective lens worn in only one eye and introduced to society as early as the 1720′s to help people see sophisticated things such as maps or documents. In the 1830′s these fashion items began to increase in popularity and became a stereotype of high society, capitalist gentlemen. Monocles were most prevalent in the late 1900′s but are rarely worn today due to the increased technology and precision of contact lenses and glasses.

However, monocles are beginning to make their come back with the rise of Steampunk. I won’t explain steampunk to you, that’s a story for another day, but I will say that the monocle was to the wealthy gentlemen of the 1900′s as the monocle is to the sophisticated connoisseur of steampunk today. In other words, it’s important and a symbol of that popular style.

So now you know! Even if you don’t like to wear the monocle in your eye socket, you can decorate your clothing with it or use it as the perfect accessory to any steampunk costume!
